Our second giveaway of the week is for a set of four cards from Rio Thomas' Etsy shop Season's Gleanings. Rio's cards feature whimsical photographs inspired by the local produce that grows in Whatcom county in northwest Washington state. Not only do her cards showcase the vibrant diversity of locally grown produce, but she also uses recycled cardstock and envelopes all packaged in certified compostable Eco Clear Bags!
Rio is the originator of a local gleaning effort that salvages produce from local farms and distributes them to those in need. The program has since turned into the Small Potatoes Gleaning Project, a program of the Bellingham Food Bank.
Now here's Rio on how Season's Gleanings began and her favorite green living tips:
Beginnings of Season's Gleanings
The collaborative effort [while running the gleaning project] was a perfect example of many hands making light work, and I regularly sent out thank you cards to show my appreciation. One day, while working on the farm, I suddenly had the idea to use various crops as the letters for my message. My Thank You card is the result! That was the beginning of Season's Gleanings designs, and I continue to be inspired by the diverse shapes and colors of fruits and vegetables.
The Creative Process
My process for creating each design usually begins with an idea for a particular message I want to convey. I then search garden, farm, and surrounding land for the 'letters' that I'll need, and imagine what type of background will enhance the overall message. Other times though, an especially curvaceous bean or irresistibly enchanting carrot will be the inspiration that calls me to an idea, as is the case with most of the mandala style designs.
My goal in sharing my work is to bring more delight and wonderment into our daily lives. I also feel that a beautiful card is an incentive to spend a moment writing a thoughtful message and in sending that out, to weave a connection to others. As a person who spends much of her time growing food that will nourish the community, my cards are an expression of a way to nourish the spirit as well.
My FAVORITE green living tips? Hmmm. Use water wisely. Don't waste (anything). Find substitutes for plastic in every aspect of your life you can think of. Garden and eat organically. If you feel you have to drive, think again. Do your best each day, then try to do better. Every thing you do matters.
