Last week I participated in elsie marley's Kids Clothes Week Challenge
(KCWC for short), and I was able to whip up these winter coats for the girls. I had hopes of making something for the boys, too, but I guess I'll have to make more time for that. Read on for more info about the pattern and fabrics I chose for these sweet little coats.
The pattern I found was this double-breasted coat
on Etsy. The pattern came as a pdf in sizes 12 months to 6 years, so it was nice to only buy one pattern for both the girls. The directions gave excellent instructions for measuring your child, assembling the pattern (you do have to print it out and tape it together), and step-by-step illustrations for sewing it all together. I ended up using the size 3 and 5 patterns, which ended up a little roomy, but hopefully they'll last another year, too!
I have to say the blue wool is my favorite. And both the blue and purple wool came from my mom who had bought them once upon a time to sew herself a coat and skirt. I would have made both of them in blue, but there wasn't enough.
I bought the buttons new at my local fabric store (it was definitely an ordeal picking them out with my four-year-old Eleanor, if it was up to her they'd be neon pink hearts!).
The lining on both coats is a vintage cotton print I found at an estate sale
in the spring. I didn't know what I was going to do with it at the time, but I had just enough for both coats.
Overall, the pattern wasn't too difficult to sew up (although it was a little tricky trying to get the pleat on the back just right). These were my first coats, and I'm very happy with how they turned out.
I had to use some reverse psychology to get my two-year-old Amelia to try her coat on, but then she realized the trick and took it off before I even had the chance to snap a photo. Eleanor did (somewhat reluctantly) let me take a few shots of her in hers, but it'll have to wait for any photos of them together. It's far from being even somewhat cold down here in San Antonio yet, but hopefully these little coats will see a lot of wearing when winter comes our way!
Did you sew anything for KCWC? Do your kids ever reject the things you make for them? I'd love to hear what you've been making!
